Efficient use of a low cost device for transvaginal aspiration of simple cysts adnexal

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of a low cost device used for the transvaginal aspiration of adnexal simple cysts. DESIGN: Observational and prospective study. SETTING: Private practice, Socabaya District, Arequipa, Peru. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with non-complicated adnexal simple cysts. INTERVENTIONS: Previous informed consent, in 15 patients bearers of non-complicated adnexal simple cysts transvaginal aspiration of the cyst was done by using a low-cost handmade device (guide) connected to a portable ultrasound machine endovaginal transducer. Samples of aspiration were sent for pathological study. Patients were surveyed clinically and by ultrasound for 12 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Difficulty and complications of the procedure, cyst remission. RESULTS: The procedure was achieved without difficulties or complications in all 15 patients. There was complete remission of the cyst in 6 of the 15 patients (40%) and partial remission in the remainder 9 patients (60%). The average volume of cyst fluid aspired was 85 mL. In those patients where cyst fluid reappeared, 29,2% of the initial volume aspired recurred after one month, 28,7% at 6 months and 30,1% at 12 months. All patients were negative for CA 125 and malignant cells in the cyst content study. All patients were asymptomatic during the 12 months. CONCLUSION: The low cost device represented an efficient and well tolerated instrument for the transvaginal aspiration of adnexal simple cysts, allowing control of this pathology with a minimally invasive procedure.
