These writings, sent between 1629 and 1631 from Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, reveal some little-known aspects, at least for this region, of the efforts of a royal servant who, even before leaving the peninsula, played an essential role in the configuration of defensive devices for an enclave of geopolitical relevance at a critical juncture. Furthermore, this repertoire of letters provides an experiential perspective on the functioning of a composite monarchy during the period of the Union of Crowns.Este artículo analiza la correspondencia enviada por el maestre de campo Pedro Esteban Dávila a distintas instancias de la administración cortesana, desde su nombramiento como gobernador de Buenos Aires hasta su llegada al Río de la Plata. Estos escritos, remitidos entre 1629 y 1631 desde Lisboa y Río de Janeiro, nos revelan algunos aspectos poco conocidos, al menos para esta región, de las gestiones de un servidor real que, aun antes de abandonar la península, desempeñaron un papel esencial en la configuración de unos dispositivos defensivos para un enclave de relevancia geopolítica en una coyuntura crítica.
