This article questions that interpretation based on a study on the relationship between the Society and the Bourbon’s reformist policies and new  documentation.La Sociedad de Amantes del País y su vocero el Mercurio Peruano fueron dos de las manifestaciones más importantes de la cultura ilustrada en el virreinato peruano a fines del siglo XVIII. Sobre ambos existe una abundante bibliografía que postula que su fracaso fue consecuencia de la censura oficial debido a su discurso crítico.
