The objective was to systematize the contributions of the literature that identify why the long-standing theoretical frameworks and their application in higher education public policies have not achieved the desired outcome, namely the reduction of dropout rates. To this end, a narrative review of the literature was conducted, drawing on nearly a century of key works in the field. The findings highlight difficulties related to defining the concept (lack of consensus and specificity), as well as methodological challenges, such as the absence of longitudinal, systemic, and integrative approaches that combine qualitative and quantitative research. Lastly, the study emphasizes the importance of identifying specific contexts where dropout is a significant issue and incorporating the right to education as a key analytical variable.Este artículo aborda el conjunto de desafíos teóricos y metodológicos que aún no han sido superados por el campo científico que estudia la deserción en la educación superior, aquí tratada metafóricamente como una maldición. El objetivo fue sistematizar el aporte de la bibliografía que señala las razones por las cuales la larga trayectoria teórica y aplicada no ha logrado el resultado esperado, es decir, la reducción de índices. Para ello, se utilizó una revisión narrativa de la bibliografía, buscando recoger aportes de varias obras de referencia en casi un siglo de historia del campo. Los resultados apuntaron a la presencia de desafíos en la definición del objeto (falta de consenso e inespecificidad). Pero también señalaron desafíos metodológicos como la falta de un enfoque longitudinal, sistémico y combinado para la investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa.Este artigo aborda o conjunto de desafios teóricos e metodológicos ainda não superados pelo campo científico que estuda o abandono na Educação Superior, aqui metaforicamente tratados como uma maldição. O objetivo foi sistematizar a contribuição da bibliografia que aponta as razões para que a longa trajetória teórica e aplicada não tenha alcançado o resultado esperado, qual seja a redução dos índices. Para tanto, foi utilizada a revisão narrativa da bibliografia, buscando colher contribuições em várias obras referenciais em quase um século de história do campo. Os resultados apontaram para a presença de desafios na definição do objeto (a falta de consenso e a inespecificidade).
