To do this, a contrast is made between the notions of will, promises and autonomy that have led the efforts to justify the binding effect of the contract in dogmatic and philosophical studies of contract law. Finally, some advantages of personal autonomy over other competing parameters are indicated, reinforcing its relevance to support the principle pacta sunt servanda.El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo mostrar que la fuerza obligatoria del contrato se encuentra justificada en el respeto por la autonomía personal de los contratantes. Para ello, se efectúa un contraste entre las nociones de voluntad, promesas y autonomía que han protagonizado los esfuerzos para justificar el efecto vinculante del contrato en los estudios dogmáticos y de filosofía del derecho de contratos.
