Through the stories and daily experiences of various testimonies collected during different research stays in the lower Marañón, we understand that to be Kukama is to be-with-the-river, as the river is constituted by the relationships between humans and non-humans. The recognition of the rights of the Marañón River requires understanding how Kukama society conceives of and relates to it and thus pointing out the contradictory aspects that emerge in the implementation of the rights.Este texto examina la noción de río de la sociedad kukama, a partir de sus experiencias en y con el río Marañón (Perú), tras el reconocimiento de este como titular de derechos. Desde su perspectiva, los cuerpos de agua existen gracias a que tienen una madre, que es la boa, y además porque debajo de los ríos vive gente (karuara). A través de los relatos y las experiencias cotidianas de varios testimonios recogidos en distintas estancias de investigación en el bajo Marañón, entendemos que ser kukama es ser-con-el-río, pues el río se constituye a partir de las relaciones entre humanos y no humanos. El reconocimiento de derechos del río Marañón requiere comprender cómo concibe y se relaciona la sociedad kukama con él, y señalar así los aspectos contradictorios que emergen en la materialización de los derechos.Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
