The results showed that satisfaction with body image, social support, the resilience, the religiosity and the presence of morbidities had a positive impact on mental health, while the use of illicit drugs, being a woman and the stress experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic increased the chances of emotional illness.El objetivo fue investigar los factores de riesgo y protectores para la salud mental de las personas que viven con VIH. Se entrevistó a 237 participantes. Hubo predominio de mujeres (51,5%), con edad media de 46,9 años, negras y pardas (67%), con bajos ingresos familiares (65,4%) y baja escolaridad (62,8%). El 72,6% de los entrevistados se consideraba adherente a la terapia antirretroviral y el 33,3% presentaron un cuadro de padecimiento emocional. Los resultados mostraron que la satisfacción con la imagen corporal, el apoyo social, la resiliencia, la religiosidad y la presencia de morbilidades impactaron positivamente en la salud mental, mientras que el consumo de drogas, actividades ilícitas, ser mujer y el estrés experimentado durante la pandemia de COVID-19 aumentó las posibilidades de sufrir una enfermedad emocional.Objetivou-se investigar os fatores de risco e proteção para saúde mental de pessoas vivendo com HIV. Foram entrevistados 237 participantes. Predominaram mulheres (51,5%), com média de 46,9 anos de idade, pretas e pardas (67%), com baixa renda familiar (65,4%) e baixa escolaridade (62,8%). Foram considerados aderentes à terapia antirretroviral 72,6% dos entrevistados e 33,3% apresentaram adoecimento emocional.
