The role of the translator as mediator and the behavioral and attitudinal dimensions of intercultural mediation are emphasized since the translator's cultural training has traditionally been focused on the acquisition of declarative knowledge. Several approaches for developing intercultural competence are reviewed and guidelines are suggested for addressing cultural competence training in translator and interpreter curricula that meet the needs of the Peruvian context.El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, la evolución del término cultura y su relación con la competencia cultural o intercultural del traductor. Se pone énfasis en la función del traductor como mediador y en los aspectos conductuales y actitudinales de la mediación intercultural, debido a que tradicionalmente la formación cultural del traductor se ha centrado en la adquisición de conocimientos declarativos. Se revisan varias propuestas de competencia intercultural y se proponen pautas para su enseñanza-aprendizaje en los programas curriculares de la formación de traductores e intérpretes que respondan a las necesidades del contexto peruano.O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar, de uma perspectiva interdisciplinar, a evolução do termo cultura e sua relação com a competência cultural ou intercultural do tradutor. A ênfase é colocada no papel do tradutor como mediador e nos aspectos comportamentais e atitudinais da mediação intercultural, já que tradicionalmente a formação cultural do tradutor tem se concentrado na aquisição de conhecimentos declarativos.
