In this article we analyze the semantics of the "regional society", which has been established as a widely spread assumption to the conceptualization of the social specificity of Latin America. This semantics considers that geographical and spatial limits are significant for the delimitation of social realities. In this way, it allows us to distinguish between internal and external realities, recognizing their simultaneous value for understanding the social dynamics that unfold in the region. Indeed, it is possible to reconstruct the diversity of theorizations about Latin America as alternative ways in which the links between the internal and the external have been conceived. The paper seeks to develop these hypotheses, while advancing in the evaluation of the theoretical and empirical limits of the semantics. We conclude about the need to move towards a non-regionalist concept of society to approach Latin America. |

Esta semántica considera que los límites geográficos y espaciales son significativos para la delimitación de las realidades sociales. De esta manera, permite distinguir entre realidades internas y externas, reconociendo su valor simultáneo para la comprensión de las dinámicas sociales que se despliegan en la región. En efecto, es posible reconstruir la diversidad de teorizaciones sobre América Latina como formas alternativas en que se han concebido los vínculos entre lo interno y lo externo. El trabajo busca desarrollar estas hipótesis, al tiempo que avanza en la evaluación de los límites teóricos y empíricos de la semántica. Se concluye acerca de la necesidad de avanzar hacia una concepción no regionalista de la sociedad para aproximarse a América Latina.Neste artigo propomos que a semântica de “sociedade regional” se estabeleceu em um pressuposto amplamente difundido para a conceituação da América Latina. Essa semântica permitiu interpretar de forma plausível as mudanças sociais associadas aos processos de independência nacional e descolonização na região. Por um lado, indicando a dissolução dos vínculos socioespaciais típicos da formação social anterior e, por outro, indicando a continuidade dos vínculos inter-regionais. Nessa direção, uma consequência analítica central da semântica foi a necessidade de avaliar tanto a realidade interna quanto a externa para compreender a dinâmica social da região. As várias teorias sociológicas sobre a América Latina podem ser vistas como formas alternativas de abordar as relações entre o interno e o externo.
