DISTANCE OF HOPE: RHETORIC ANALYSIS OF ALEJANDRO ROMUALDO’S “ASÍ ESTAMOS” AND MANUEL SCORZA’S “AÑOS DE LOS CASTIGOS”

Alejandro Romualdo's poetry occupies a paradigmatic place in the Peruvian poetry corpus of the 20th century. The widely ignored purist tendency of his first poetic aproach is still present in his later poetry, especially in Poesía Concreta (1952). To demonstrate this, we compare one of the poems of said book, “Así estamos” with the poem “Años de los castigos” by Manuel Scorza, a poet considered by the critics as social and confrontational. Using Comparative Rhetoric and the Rhetoric of Argumentation, it can be seen that both poets lean towards metaphorical and symbolic consonances to demonstrate the inclusion of all people in a common ideal of the Peruvian nation, yet the hermetic presence of hope in Romualdo’s poem differs with the fatalistic ending of Scorza's social poetry.
