Mario Vargas Llosa’s literature largely revolves around human rights and their violations. Topics such as authoritarianism, the breakdown of the rule of law, the abuse of power, and critiques of traditional institutions like schools, the church, and the military are addressed with such skill and depth that they reveal the author’s profound understanding of Latin American society. His character development and the descriptions of their contexts have contributed to the success of many of Vargas Llosa’s works, which have been adapted for film. The selection of works and film adaptations presented here seeks to explore machismo, prostitution, dictatorship, and corruption, and how each of these constitutes a form of violence that impacts the lives of the characters, affecting rights such as human dignity, freedom, and equality.
