Se investigó lo siguiente: (a) los predictores socioculturales y cognitivos de la comprensión de lectura en 314 alumnos de cuarto grado; (b) la variación sociocultural en el desarrollo de la comprensión de lectura de 331 alumnos de quinto grado; y (c) si el nivel de comprensión de lectura y de motivación hacia la lectura de 202 alumnos de quinto grado mejoraba con un programa de lectura con un enfoque en motivación. Las variables que contribuyeron con mayor fuerza al desarrollo de la comprensión de lectura en los estudiantes fueron vocabulario, decodificación, motivación hacia la lectura y el estatus socioeconómico, que está relacionado al clima alfabético del hogar. Las variables que contribuyeron con menor fuerza fueron el género y la madurez intelectual, que mostró mayor impacto en los niños mayores. En cuanto al efecto del programa de comprensión de lectura, las estrategias de monitoreo no mostraron relación con el desarrollo de la lectura y las estrategias de rutina evidenciaron una relación negativa con la misma.
