Las comparaciones se basaron en modelos bidimensionales de elementos finitos, estudiándose tanto cimentaciones superficiales como embebidas, para una variedad de modelos y propiedades del suelo, con diversas hipótesis de conectividad entre cimentación y suelo y distintas intensidades de sismo. Al comparar resultados de análisis no lineales con aquellos de análisis lineales con propiedades secantes equivalentes se obtuvieron resultados cualitativamente similares, como ya ha sido reportado para modelo monodimensionales. Sin embargo se observaron diferencias significativas cuando las propiedades supuestas no son consistentes con los niveles máximos de deformación. Los efectos de deslizamientos o separación en cimentaciones superficiales fueron menos importantes de lo inicialmente esperado, aunque evidenciándose la importancia de un modelo que represente adecuadamente las propiedades de rigidez no lineales y los efectos de radiación de ondas de las componentes de alta frecuencia. Se apreciaron efectos más importantes en cimentaciones embebidas, principalmente como consecuencia de la separación entre la caras laterales y el suelo.
