Sin embargo, durante los últimos años, la dinámica de crecimiento de la industria turística en todo el país se ha visto afectada y Arequipa es una las principales regiones que ha sido también impactada por la desaceleración del turismo, situación resultante debido a esfuerzos insuficientes en el desarrollo de una oferta turística competitiva que pueda hacer frente a nuevas tendencias de demanda turística y nuevos destinos turísticos alrededor del mundo. El análisis realizado para el sector turismo en la región está orientado a identificar las oportunidades determinantes que puedan ser aprovechadas para plantear estrategias que puedan ser aplicadas tomando en cuenta las capacidades reales del sector en la región. Por lo tanto es importante para la región Arequipa contar con un Planeamiento Estratégico adecuadamente planteado y elaborado que señale el camino para lograr una pronta reactivación de oferta turística única, atractiva y competitiva, generadora de mayores ingresos para Arequipa, de tal forma que la industria del turismo se convierta en la principal actividad de soporte a la economía de la región, superando la dependencia económica de sectores tradicionales, como la minería y construcción
