El estudio es de tipo exploratorio y utiliza una metodología cualitativa; la cual permitió entrevistar a los participantes y conversar acerca de sus creencias y experiencias con la enfermedad mental y explorar de qué manera estas repercuten en la relación con sus familiares diagnosticadas con alguna enfermedad mental. Para ello, se utilizó una entrevista semi-estructurada creada por la investigadora, la cual aborda los objetivos de la investigación. Se entrevistaron a siete familiares de pacientes psiquiátricas quienes al momento de la entrevista, se encontraban hospitalizadas. Los participantes, debían tener no solo una relación familiar con las pacientes sino que además debían de haber convivido habitualmente con ellas. Los resultados muestran que las concepciones acerca de enfermedad mental, en este grupo, son un fenómeno complejo teñido de negatividad; dando cuenta del entendimiento subjetivo que tienen los participantes sobre la enfermedad mental y sus orígenes, la dificultad que implica el afrontamiento de la misma y sus consecuencias a nivel personal y familiar. Además, se muestran los factores internos y externos que interfieren en la relación (a nivel personal y familiar) con las pacientes.

Además, se muestran los factores internos y externos que interfieren en la relación (a nivel personal y familiar) con las pacientes.The following research’s main objective is to explore the conceptions of mental illness in family members of female in-patients in a psychiatric hospital in Lima. This is an exploratory study that uses a qualitative methodology. To achieve the study objectives, seven family members were selected for interviews. In order to participate, subjects needed to fulfill two principal requirements: have a blood relationship with a psychiatric patient (who had been at least hospitalized for two weeks by the time of the interview and diagnosed with a mental disease) and have regularly cohabitated with the patient. A semi-structured interview process enabled participants to talk about their experiences and beliefs regarding their relative’s mental illness. Furthermore, it allowed them to acknowledge how their conception of the mental illness affected their relationship with their interned relative. The findings show that family members conceive mental illness as a complex phenomenon with negative implications. The interview process additionally uncovered the relatives’ understanding of the causes of mental illness; their own difficult experience of dealing with said illness and the personal and family consequences that these create.
