Design/methodology/approach. The study was carried out based on the daily price records of the NASDAQ financial asset during 2013–2017. TA approach was carried out under graphical analysis applying the standard MACD. GA approach took place by chromosome encoding, fitness evaluation and genetic operators. Traditional genetic operators (i.e. crossover and mutation) were adopted as based on the chromosome customization and fitness evaluation. The chromosome encoding stage used MACD to represent the genes of each chromosome to encode the parameters of MACD in a chromosome. For each chromosome, buy and sell indexes of the strategy were considered. Fitness evaluation served to defining the evaluation strategy of the chromosomes in the population according to the fitness function using the returns gained in each chromosome. Findings. The paper provides empirical-theoretical insights about the effectiveness of GA to overcome the investment strategies based on MACD and B&H by achieving 5 and 11% higher returns per year, respectively. GA-based approach was additionally capable of improving the return-to-risk ratio of the investment. Research limitations/implications. Limitations deal with the fact that the study was carried out on US markets conditions and data which hamper its application in some extend to markets with not as much development. Practical implications. The findings suggest that not only skilled but also amateur investors may opt for investment strategies based on GA aiming at refining profitable financial signals to their advantage. Originality/value. This paper looks at machine learning as an up-to-date tool with great potential for increasing effectiveness in profits when applied into TA investment approaches using MACD in well-developed stock markets.

This paper looks at machine learning as an up-to-date tool with great potential for increasing effectiveness in profits when applied into TA investment approaches using MACD in well-developed stock markets.Objetivo: Este estudio tiene como objetivo determinar si mediante la aplicación de algoritmos genéticos (AG) a través del tradicional análisis técnico (AT) utilizando medias móviles de convergencia/divergencia (MACD), es posible alcanzar rendimientos superiores a los que se obtendrían utilizando estrategias de inversión de análisis técnico siguiendo un enfoque tradicional (AT) y la estrategia de comprar y mantener (B&H). Diseño/metodología/enfoque: El estudio se realizó con base en los registros diarios de precios del activo financiero NASDAQ durante 2013-2017. La aproximación AT se realizó mediante análisis gráfico aplicando el estándar MACD. El enfoque AG se llevó a cabo mediante codificación cromosómica, evaluación de aptitud y operadores genéticos. Los operadores genéticos tradicionales (es decir, cruce y mutación) se adoptaron basándose en la personalización de los cromosomas y la evaluación de la aptitud. La etapa de codificación de cromosomas utilizó MACD para representar los genes de cada cromosoma para codificar los parámetros de MACD en un cromosoma. Para cada cromosoma se consideraron índices de compra y venta de la estrategia. La evaluación del fitness sirvió para definir la estrategia de evaluación de los cromosomas de la población según la función fitness utilizando los rendimientos obtenidos en cada cromosoma. Hallazgos: El artículo proporciona conocimientos empírico-teóricos sobre la eficacia de AG para superar las estrategias de inversión basadas en MACD y B&H al lograr rendimientos un 5 y un 11% más altos por año, respectivamente. El enfoque basado en AG también fue capaz de mejorar la relación rentabilidad-riesgo de la inversión. Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación: Las limitaciones tienen que ver con el hecho de que el estudio se realizó en condiciones y datos de los mercados estadounidenses que dificultan en cierta medida su aplicación a mercados con no tanto desarrollo. Implicaciones prácticas: Los resultados sugieren que no sólo los inversores cualificados sino también los aficionados pueden optar por estrategias de inversión basadas en AG con el objetivo de refinar las señales financieras rentables para su beneficio.
