Because environmental pollution may add further stress to life at high altitude, the present study explored the effect of metal pollution on the macroinvertebrate community composition in Andean streams between 3,500 to 4,500 meters above sea level (masl) during wet and dry seasons. At polluted sites, showing a high conductivity and a low pH, metal concentrations (e.g., Al, 13.07 mg/L; As, 3.49 mg/L; Mn, 19.65 mg/L; Pb, 0.876 mg/L; Zn, 16.08 mg/L) ranged from 8-fold up to 3,500-fold higher than at reference sites. The cumulative criterion unit allowed quantifying the potential toxicity of metal mixtures at the contaminated sites. Principal component analysis of physical chemical variables showed that reference sites were more likely to be structured by transparency, water discharge, and current velocity, while polluted sites appeared to be determined by metals and conductivity. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated a strong influence of highly correlated metals in structuring invertebrate communities, which were dominated by dipterans, coleopterans, collembolans, and mites at polluted sites. At reference sites crustaceans, ephemeropterans, plecopterans, and trichopterans were the most representative taxa. We concluded that severe metal pollution induced changes in macroinvertebrate community composition in high-altitude Andean streams, with a replacement of sensitive taxa by more tolerant taxa. Yet relatively species-rich communities persisted under harsh conditions.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica - ConcytecengSociety of Environmental Toxicology and ChemistryEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistryinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessReemplazo de taxonesArroyos andinos de gran altura-1composición de la comunidad-1macroinvertebrados-1macroinvertebrados-1Contaminación por metales-1https://purl.org/pe-repo/ocde/ford#1.06.13-1Metal-induced shifts in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition in andean high altitude streamsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlereponame:CONCYTEC-Institucionalinstname:Consejo Nacional de Ciencia Tecnología e Innovacióninstacron:CONCYTEC20.500.12390/1228oai:repositorio.concytec.gob.pe:20.500.12390/12282024-05-30 16:01:56.531http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cbinfo:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessmetadata only accesshttps://repositorio.concytec.gob.peRepositorio Institucional CONCYTECrepositorio@concytec.gob.pe#PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE##PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE##PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE##PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE##PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE##PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE##PLACEHOLDER_PARENT_METADATA_VALUE#<Publication xmlns="https://www.openaire.eu/cerif-profile/1.1/" id="ca705b4f-9b5c-40f4-b54c-bf79711c6199"> <Type xmlns="https://www.openaire.eu/cerif-profile/vocab/COAR_Publication_Types">http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_1843</Type> <Language>eng</Language> <Title>Metal-induced shifts in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition in andean high altitude streams</Title> <PublishedIn> <Publication> <Title>Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry</Title> </Publication> </PublishedIn> <PublicationDate>2010</PublicationDate> <DOI>https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.327</DOI> <ISI-Number>284683200016</ISI-Number> <Authors> <Author> <DisplayName>Loayza-Muro, RA</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03509" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> <Author> <DisplayName>Elias-Letts, R</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03510" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> <Author> <DisplayName>Marticorena-Ruiz, JK</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03514" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> <Author> <DisplayName>Palomino, EJ</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03512" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> <Author> <DisplayName>Duivenvoorden, JF</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03513" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> <Author> <DisplayName>Kraak, MHS</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03515" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> <Author> <DisplayName>Admiraal, W</DisplayName> <Person id="rp03511" /> <Affiliation> <OrgUnit> </OrgUnit> </Affiliation> </Author> </Authors> <Editors> </Editors> <Publishers> <Publisher> <DisplayName>Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry</DisplayName> <OrgUnit /> </Publisher> </Publishers> <Keyword>Reemplazo de taxones</Keyword> <Keyword>Arroyos andinos de gran altura</Keyword> <Keyword>composición de la comunidad</Keyword> <Keyword>macroinvertebrados</Keyword> <Keyword>macroinvertebrados</Keyword> <Keyword>Contaminación por metales</Keyword>
High altitude creates unique challenging conditions to biota that limit the diversity of benthic communities.
