At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, positivism spread throughout Latin America, achieving a strong consolidation in Chile, where the political and social fluctuations had prepared the liberals to implant their ideas, consolidate their vision about the national state and complete the annexation of the indigenous territory. In this process, the arrival of several European intellectuals to the national territory was the starting point of the academic organization of the social sciences, being Ricardo Latcham undoubtedly one of the most important. His anthropological and archaeological work was the starting point of scientific social science in the country, generating an extensive bibliography of importance to this day. The following article seeks to describe the political and scientific context of the time and how Ricardo Latcham became one of the most important names in Chilean anthropology. A finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX el positivismo se expandía por América Latina, logrando una fuerte consolidación en Chile, donde los vaivenes políticos y sociales había preparado a los liberales para implantar sus ideas, consolidar su visión de Estado Nacional y terminar el proceso de anexión del territorio indígena. En este proceso, la llegada de varios intelectuales europeos al territorio nacional fue el punto de partida de la organización académica de las ciencias sociales, siendo Ricardo Latcham sin duda uno de los más importantes. Su obra antropológica y arqueológica fue el punto de partida de la ciencia social científica en el país, generando una amplia bibliografía de importancia hasta el día de hoy. El siguiente artículo busca describir el contexto politico y cientifico de la época y como Ricardo Latcham se convirtió en uno de los nombres más importantes de la antropología chilena.
