In recent years, scientific journals have become the channel or medium through which researchers, academics, and society in general carry out the processes of dissemination and popularization of scientific knowledge, in this sense it is important to study this phenomenon. The objective of this article is to identify the theoretical background of scientific journals, as well as to conceptualize, classify and establish their characteristics, and to identify the indexing systems used by scientific journals in Latin America. The documentary analysis method was applied with a qualitative approach, non-experimental design, under a transversal descriptive level. After the documentary review, it was observed that; scientific journals are classified into electronic and printed journals where each one is classified according to different criteria such as periodicity, format, or publishing entity, on the other hand, evaluation criteria have been created that allow knowing the status of the journals, allowing them to enter in high impact databases. It is concluded that it is necessary that the editors and academic bodies in charge of the journals become aware of the importance of complying with the criteria for the evaluation of scientific activity to position the journals in high impact databases.
Las revistas científicas se han convertido en los últimos años en el canal o el medio por el cual los investigadores, académicos y sociedad en general realizan los procesos de difusión y divulgación del conocimiento científico, en este sentido es importante estudiar este fenómeno. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo identificar los antecedentes teóricos de las revistas científicas, así como, conceptualizar, clasificar y establecer las características de estas, también, se identificará los sistemas de indexación con los que cuentan las revistas científicas en Latinoamérica. Se aplicó el método de análisis documental con un enfoque cualitativo, diseño no experimental, bajo un nivel descriptivo transversal. Tras la revisión documental se observó que; las revistas científicas se clasifican en revistas electrónicas e impresas donde cada una se clasifican atendiendo a diferentes criterios como la periodicidad, el formato o la entidad editora, por otra, se han creado criterios de evaluación que permiten conocer el estado de las revistas, permitiéndoles ingresar en bases de datos de alto impacto. Se concluye que es necesario que los editores y cuerpos académicos encargados de las revistas tomen conciencia de la importancia del cumplimiento de los criterios de evaluación de actividad científica con la finalidad de posicionar a las revistas en bases de datos de alto impacto.
