The neonatal mortality rate was 19,7% and the early neonatal mortality rate 13,2%. Regarding the maternal social and demographic factors, 64,5% were pregnant between 20 and 34 years old, 70yo bad higher schooling, 67,5% were in a consensual union, 47,5% had 1 to 4 children, 26,5% have bad abortion and 40,5% did not have prenatal care, 94,51% of pregnancie were high risk pregnancies. CONCLUSION: The mortality rate is high and reflects the low social status of the woman attended at Maternal and Perinatal Institute.OBJETIVO: Conocer la tasa de mortalidad neonatal en Materno Perinatal y los factores maternos sociodemográficos relacionados con éste. DISEÑ0: Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo. LUGAR: Instituto Materno Perinatal. RESULTADOS.- En el primer semestre de 1996, ocurrieron 210 muertes neonatales, siendo la tasa de mortalidad neonatal institucional de 19,79% y la tasa de mortalidad neonatal precoz de 13,21%. Al analizar los maternos sociodemográficos se halló 64,59% de gestantes entre 20 y 34 años de edad, 709% con instrucción). secundaria, 67,5% convivientes, 47,5% tenía de 1 a 4 hijos, 26,5% tenía antecedentes de aborto y 40,5% no tuvo control prenatal; 94,5% de estos embarazos fueron considerados de riesgo alto.
