OBJECTIVE: To study the trend in maternal mortality occurred in the Regional Hospital of Loreto 1991 to 1999. DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive epidemiological study of maternal deaths in the hospital records. SUBJECTS: 55 women who died during pregnancy, childbirth or the postpartum period. LOCATION: Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Regional Hospital of Loreto. RESULTS: The direct obstetric death represented 83.7% (46 cases), in which 27.3% (15 cases) was due to hemorrhage, 25.5% (14 cases) by infections, 21.8% (12 cases ) for pregnancy-induced hypertension and 9.1% (5 cases) by other direct causes. Indirect obstetric was 16.3% (9 cases). The maternal mortality rate was 313/100 000 live births. CONCLUSION: emphasis on the study of maternal mortality in most cases it done preventable. Besides institutional and regional problems that affect maternal mortality at the levels it explained.
