Fetal health and ultrasound diagnosis in the perinatal Zika virus infection

Congenital Zika virus syndrome comprises a series of fetal malformations, mainly of the central nervous system, that share a pattern of brain atrophy and disorders in neuronal migration, and that have in microcephaly their most striking and severe expression. Ultrasonography plays the most important role in the screening of brain lesions in the fetuses of pregnant women exposed to Zika virus, so the importance of establishing a systematic evaluation in the routine ultrasound controls of pregnant women in areas of transmission of the disease becomes apparent. It is also important to note that fetal neurosonography is the reference standard in the evaluation of fetal brain anatomy and should be part of the diagnostic algorithm in all suspected cases.
El síndrome congénito por el virus zika comprende una serie de malformaciones fetales, principalmente del sistema nervioso central, que comparten un patrón de atrofia cerebral y trastornos en la migración neuronal, y que tienen en la microcefalia su expresión más llamativa y más grave. La ultrasonografía cumple el papel más importante en el despistaje de lesiones cerebrales en los fetos de mujeres embarazadas expuestas a la infección por el virus zika, por lo que resulta evidente la trascendencia de establecer una evaluación sistemática en los controles ecográficos de rutina de las gestantes en las áreas de transmisión de la enfermedad. Asimismo, es importante destacar que la neurosonografía fetal es el estándar de referencia en la evaluación de la anatomía cerebral fetal y debería formar parte del algoritmo diagnóstico en todos los casos sospechosos.
