Health in Peru 40 years after the Alma Ata Conference

On September 12, 1978, the WHO, UNICEF and 134 countries signed in Alma Ata (City of the Former Soviet Union) the declaration of primary health care (PHC), with the hope of achieving in the year 2000 'Health for All ' Although it is evident that the objectives set out in this commitment were not achieved in the proposed period, its approach has been an important milestone for Public Health in the world and has transcended the current context, since it established the need to build a new health system in the signatory nations,starting by defining the concept of health and its meaning as a state of physical, social and mental well-being, and not simply the lack of diseases or discomforts, placing it as a fundamental human right, in which other social and economic sectors must participate in addition to the health sector.
El 12 de setiembre de 1978, la OMS, UNICEF y 134 países firmaron en Alma Ata (Ciudad de la Ex Unión Soviética) la declaración de atención primaria de salud (APS), con la esperanza de lograr en el año 2000 ‘Salud para Todos’. Aun cuando es evidente que los objetivos planteados en este compromiso no se llegaron a alcanzar en el período propuesto, su planteamiento ha significado un hito importante para la Salud Pública en el mundo y ha trascendido al contexto actual, toda vez que estableció la necesidad de construir un nuevo sistema de salud en las naciones firmantes, empezando por definir el concepto de salud y su significado como un estado de bienestar físico, social y mental, y no simplemente la falta de enfermedades o malestares, ubicándolo como un derecho humano fundamental, en el cual deben participar otros sectores sociales y económicos en adición al sector salud.
