Cervical cancer: New perspectives for prevention and control

The most important advance for global of control cervical cancer is the emergence of prophylactic vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18. A new phase starts that changes cervical cancer prevention and control paradigms, whose impact in the reduction in incidence and mortality will be observed by many of us in the next 20 years. The main challenge will be to establish an organized social response according to our physical infrastructure and human resources, our finantial factibility to implement the new technologies in the people and very importantly to consider the need of education and health promotion according to local and regional needs; all this to guarantee one of the main health rights, equity of access to all our population.
El más importante avance para el control global del cáncer cervical es la emergencia de vacunas profilácticas contra VPH 16 y 18. Se inicia una etapa que cambia el paradigma de prevención y control del cáncer cervical, cuyo impacto en la reducción de la incidencia y mortalidad podrá ser observado por muchos de nosotros en los próximos 20 años. El principal desafío será establecer una respuesta social organizada acorde a nuestra infraestructura física y de recursos humanos, nuestra factibilidad financiera para implementar en el ámbito poblacional las nuevas tecnologías, y muy importantemente, considerar la necesidad de educación y promoción de la salud acordes con las necesidades locales y regionales; todo ello para garantizar uno de los principales derechos a la salud, la equidad de acceso a toda nuestra población.
