K. in Baltimore. Narrative Similarities between The Wire and The Castle

This paper studies the narrative similarities between the novel The Castle by Franz Kafka and the TV series The Wire, created by David Simon for HBO. We analyze the main characters in each work, K. in The Castle and Jimmy McNulty in The Wire, as antiheroes that fight against the bureaucracy of the institution they work for. Also, we find other connexions between both works in aspects like the socio-historical context, the presence of an opaque and strongly hierarchized power, as well as analogies in the representation of institutions and the individuals who face them.
Este artículo investiga la existencia de afinidades narrativas entre la novela El castillo de Franz Kafka y la serie televisiva The Wire, creada por David Simon para HBO. A partir del análisis de los personajes principales en ambas obras, K. y Jimmy McNulty, encontramos el arquetipo común de antihéroe enfrentado a la burocracia de la institución para la que trabaja. Al profundizar en el estudio formal del relato se detectan nexos en aspectos como el contexto socio-histórico, la presencia del poder anónimo, opaco y fuertemente jerarquizado, así como analogías estilísticas en la representación de las instituciones y de los individuos que se enfrentan a ellas.
