Environmental management of solid wastes in Cayetano Heredia Hospital

This paper presents the main results of a thesis to obtain the degree of Geographical Engineer. The hospitals generate thousand of tones of waste per year. This waste has a great complexity because they come from toxic, radioactive and infectious materials apart from common wastes. The quantity of this waste is increasing along with the development of our country and there is a public concern related to the impacts on health of a bad dispose of hospital wastes. The main objective of the thesis is proposing a good management of hospital wastes taking into consideration the source and the final disposal. It focuses on the correct classification of the wastes because this reduces the impact. This environmental management has to accomplish the technical normative of our country and takes international experiences that can be applied to the Cayetano Heredia Hospital in Lima and would improve the present standards.
Este artículo presenta los principales resultados de la tesis para optar el grado de Ingeniera Geógrafa. Los establecimientos de salud generan miles de toneladas anuales de desechos. Éstos poseen una gran complejidad, debido a que comprenden, además de desechos comunes, materiales tóxicos, radiactivos e infecciosos. Sumado a esto, las cantidades que se generan son cada vez mayores a medida que nuestro país continúa desarrollándose, y la inquietud pública por los impactos negativos que tiene en la salud humana está en aumento. La investigación tiene como principal objetivo proponer un adecuado manejo de los residuos hospitalarios desde la fuente hasta su disposición final. Está enfocada a la correcta clasificación de los residuos ya que esto minimizará el impacto. Este manejo ambiental deberá cumplir con las normas técnicas establecidas actualmente en el país y dar alcances sobre experiencias internacionales que se aplicarían en el Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia en Lima y mejorarían los actuales estándares que se aplican.
