During the neurodegenerative processes there is a reduction of the function and viability of neurons. The pathological increase in the intracellular calcium concentration, the alteration of the synaptic plasticity and the apoptosis are implicated in Alzheimer disease (AD, a paradigm of a neurodegenerative process, related with the progressive loss of cognitive functions. To evaluate neuroprotector effect of Piper aduncumdamage was induced with Aβ1-42 and NMDA to cultured cells. So hippocampal cells were treated with Aβ 1-42 1 uM and cellular viability, levels of caspasa-3 and expression of NMDA receptors in synapses were evaluated. Also, intracellular calcium influxe (sobreestimulation with NMDA) of was registered in treatments with P. aduncum. In the neuroprotector evaluation there is a reduction of 20.6% of caspasa-3; one increase of 9.6% over control and recovery of 20.86% for NR1 a...

The free radicals and the oxidative damage are related with cellular death, with the lipid peroxidation being a mechanism that leads to oxidative destruction of the cellular membrane. Furthermore, in inflammatory process, one of the first stages is the incremented vascular permeability (formation of the oedema) followed with the extravasation of the fluids, migration of the leucocytes to the damaged site and release of pro-inflammatory proteins. Was evaluated antioxidants and anti-inflammatory of Petiveria alliacea“mucura”. For antioxidants effect, was evaluated formation of thiobarituric acid reactive substances as indicator of lipid peroxidation. Doses 200 mg/mL of Petiveria alliaceadecrease significatly in 42% levels of MDA compared to water (negative control). In the antiinflammatory evaluation, inflammation was analyzed in the carrageenan-induced paw oedema test in mice (solutio...

β-Amyloid (Aβ) is a toxic peptide that has a high propensity for aggregation, and it is often present in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Bioactive compounds from medicinal plants with neuroprotective properties are of interest in protecting against toxic forms of the Aβ peptide. In the present work, we evaluate the in vitro antiaggregant / disaggregating capacity of amyloid and amyloid-type aggregates by the anthocyanins of Zea mays L. (purple corn). Using the differential pH method, we quantified the total anthocyanin content. With the help of spectrophotometric readings of the amyloid-like protein-Congo Red and Aβ-Congo Red complexes, we evaluated the antiaggregation and disaggregation effects of anthocyanins on amyloid peptides and amyloid derivatives. The results showed a significant activity of antiaggregant / disaggregating capacity by anthocyanins, (33.54...
