The double number that we present on this occasion brings together a set of collaborations related to the world of art in the southern Andes, where the iconographic is connected with the approaches of cultural and social history, as well as anthropology. Thus, the articles that make up the dossier of this edition —especially the contributions of the three academics from North American universities— have as a common denominator the study of the iconography present in colonial pictorial art, revealing the rich underlying symbology in Andean art and its connections with multifaceted social and cultural factors.

This issue has been conceived with the purpose of publicizing recent historiographical works on Arequipa, a clearly significant region in Peru that in recent years has to its credit the innovative and fruitful intellectual production of several young researchers. The articles published here are the result of the constant, silent and patient work of a new generation that, despite the difficulties of research in this country, has been developing efforts to address new issues from various approaches and fields such as Cultural History , economic-social, legal and historiography. The composition of this selection of articles also responds to the express purpose of presenting works on regional history, dedicating an issue to one or more particular regions from time to time.

We wanted to dedicate this issue to some social actors who were the protagonists of two decisive moments in Peruvian history: the culminating expansive period of the Inca Empire and the stage of exploration, demarcation and territorial settlement of the conquering expeditions. Recent historiography has been largely enriched by research on various agents involved in both deeply connected historical processes. The purpose of this issue of Allpanchis is to broaden the discussion around the protagonists of Andean history, whose trajectories can and should be studied in detail from various perspectives.

Allpanchis magazine turns forty years old, a true milestone for a periodic publication that with great perseverance has been offering, in its 74 issues, studies that address the Andean reality from various disciplines, academic currents and perspectives. Throughout these years, the journal has published 691 collaborations by some five hundred authors, with a plurality of specialties —such as Anthropology, History, Sociology or Religious Sciences— that express well its multidisciplinary nature. For all these reasons, we present a commemorative double issue in this edition.

The author –who was in charge of these procedures in South Bend MacCormack’s house– shares his experiences there, his impressions on her relationship to the Andean world and his gratitude to every person who was involved into this valuable project.
