El profesor Reinhard Zimmermann, nacido en Hamburgo en 1952, es actualmente codirector del Instituto Max-Planck de Derecho Comparado y Derecho Internacional Privado. Zimmermann es un importante exponente del método histórico-crítico, quien, a través de la reconstrucción de los orígenes romanos de las distintas instituciones de derecho privado, pretende presentar una visión panorámica de los distintos ordenamientos jurídicos y contribuir a la unificación del derecho privado en Europa.
