Objective: To evaluate the dose-response analgesic effect of metformin in an acute pain event in rodents. Materials and methods: Eighty (80) mice were used. The analgesic effect was evaluated using the abdominal writhing test in mice. Eight (8) groups of 10 mice each were formed: one diclofenac 8 mg/kg group, one tramadol group, one target group, and five experimental groups of metformin at doses of 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/kg. For the statistical analysis, the D'Agostino-Pearson test, one-tailed ANOVA test, Tukey's test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used. Results: The D'Agostino-Pearson normality test revealed a p-value < 0.05 in all groups. The ANOVA test showed a p-value < 0.0001. The Tukey's range test obtained a p-value < 0.05 between the target group and metformin groups at all doses, and between the diclofenac group and metformin groups at doses of 100, ...

ABSTRACT Hepatic rupture is a rare complication of pregnancy associated with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, thus increasing maternal morbidity and mortality. There are no reported cases of this condition in high-altitude dweller pregnant women, even though altitude is considered a factor that influences in pregnancy. In this article the case of a pregnant dweller at high altitude is reported, which revealed hepatic rupture with persistent bleeding, being reoperated by Emergency Surgery appropriately thanks to the hemodynamic monitoring with transesophageal Doppler.

This research aimed to find out the frequency and ways of using medicinal plants by pregnant women treated at the Centro de Salud Viña Alta, located in La Molina district. Twenty-one (21) pregnant women voluntarily participated in the study, where they were administered an expert-validated survey regarding the use of medicinal plants. The results showed that 86 % of the pregnant women used medicinal plants and 67 % did not ask their doctor before using them. The most frequent way of using the medicinal plants was by oral intake as herbal teas. The most widely used medicinal plants were chamomile, parsley, eucalyptus, boldo, aloe, mint and rue, some of which produced a teratogenic effect, uterine stimulant action, abortifacient effect, among others. It is necessary to know the actual quantity and most frequent way of using medicinal plants by pregnant women to classify these products as ...

Objective: To study the antioxidant activity and phytochemical screening of capitula of Tagetes filifolia Lag. “pacha anís”. Materials and methods: An experimental study which used 5 kg of capitula of a medicinal plant called Tagetes filifolia Lag. collected from the Department of Junín, Peru. The phytochemical screening method proposed by Olga Lock, M.D. was used for the phytochemical screening and the DPPH method for the determination of the antioxidant activity. The sample was divided into 3 groups: ether, ethyl alcohol and distilled water at concentrations of 100, 50 and 5 μg/ml, respectively. Results: Abundant amounts of phenols were found in both the distilled water extract and the ethyl alcohol extract, and the latter had moderate amounts of quinones. Besides, the ethyl alcohol extract showed the largest percentage of freeradical scavenging (91.26%) at a concentration of 10...

Objectives: To determine the possible pharmacological interactions from the leaves of Maytenus macrocarpa with inhibitory and stimulating bowel motility drugs. Methods: We used 110 male albino mice with average weight of 25g, Arbos and others method was applied. Activated charcoal was administered at 5 % at dose of 0.1ml/10g, as an intestinal marker. The experimental groups included 0.1 ml/10 g of distilled water, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 1 (500mg/kg), leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 (3000 mg/kg), 1,5mg/kg of atropine, 5mg/kg of loperamide, 0.4mg/kg of neostigmine, 10mg/kg of metoclopramide, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 1 with metoclopramide, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 1 with loperamide, leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 with metoclopramide and leave extract of M. macrocarpa 2 with loperamide. The statistical validation was based on Wilconxon, ANOVA and Tukey test. Results: T...
