Although most thinkers agree that we live in secular societies, they do not always share the same understanding of this concept. Since the philosopher Charles Taylor has exemplarily investigated the subject of secularity in his writings, I will comment on the fundamental ideas of the first volume of his book A Secular Age (2007). The three central ideas recognized in this book are studied in the three respective sections of this paper: 1) the four meanings of secularity, 2) the titanic change in Western society and 3) the historical itinerary of such titanic change from the transcendent to the immanent.

Estudia el significado del concepto de reconocimiento en Charles Taylor, además de establecer cuál es la relación entre reconocimiento e identidad. Determina, además, cuán justas son las observaciones de Honneth, Fraser y Ricoeur a la concepción del reconocimiento de Taylor.

Establece nexos entre el reconocimiento y la modernidad, fue atinado estudiar las reflexiones de Taylor en torno a estos dos tópicos. No obstante, hay que explicitar que el tema central de la presente investigación es un problema que pertenece al terreno de la filosofía del reconocimiento de Charles Taylor. Si la presente tesis tiene un capítulo dedicado a la concepción tayloriana de la modernidad, es porque en ella hay una posible explicación a la pregunta que motivó esta investigación: ¿Por qué Charles Taylor no continúo escribiendo sobre el reconocimiento? En otras palabras, fue una interrogante de la filosofía del reconocimiento la que condujo a estudiar sus reflexiones sobre la modernidad.
