Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system. In Peru it is not considered an important public health disease. At present Peruvian public health criteria are outdated and fail to address the concept of health and non-communicable diseases whose growth is remarkable. Therefore a new approach to public health from a preventive point of view is proposed and criteria are evaluated. After analysis it is concluded that infertility should be considered a disease of public health interest with a preventive approach.

Existe una divergencia entre la ley, el uso de las tecnologías de reproducción asistida y la salud mental en el Perú. Estos tres aspectos deberían concordar en su objetivo y su preocupación por el bienestar del individuo. Sin embargo, se demuestra una poca sensibilidad ante la problemática y la realidad de las parejas infértiles en el Perú. En el presente artículo se analizan algunos aspectos, que relacionados a la salud mental, conllevan la infertilidad. Asimismo, se precisan los aspectos de la ley vigente que pueden contribuir con el deterioro de la salud mental de las personas con infertilidad en el Perú.

There is a divergence between the law, the use of assisted reproductive technologies and Mental Health in Peru. These three aspects should be consistent in their focus and concern for the welfare of the individual. However, a little sensitivity to the problems and the reality of infertile couples in Peru shows. In this article some aspects that related to mental health are discussed, involving infertility. Also, aspects of the existing law that may contribute to the deterioration of the mental health of people with infertility in Peru are required.
