Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a worldwide viral disease that causes reproductive failure in adult pigs and respiratory problems in young animals. PRRS causes serious economic losses, which is why it is considered the infectious disease with the greatest economic impact affecting the world swine industry. Given the proven genetic variability of the virus, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) has reclassified the genotypes initially recognized as European and American; renaming them Betaarterivirus suid-1 and 2, respectively. The reclassification would be widely influenced by the biology of the virus, which impacts on the use of diagnostic techniques, and on the implementation of the disease control and prevention mechanisms. The objective of this review is to provide the veter...

The aim of this study was to detect porcine circovirus 2 (CVP2) and porcine parvovirus (PVP) in foetal tissue samples from sows with reproductive problems on pig farms in the Lima and Amazonas regions. Thirty-eight pools of foetal tissue samples (heart, lung, and spleen) from 13 sows collected from September 2020 to October 2021 were used. Molecular detection of CVP2 and PVP was performed using real-time and conventional PCR, respectively. A commercial kit (IDEXX, USA) was used for real-time PCR, and the protocol reported by Zheng et al. (2013) was used for conventional PCR, with slight variations. Abortions occurred in the last (76.9%; 10/13) and second thirds of gestation (23.1%, 3/13). Of the foetal organ pools (P14 and P19), 5.3% (2/38) tested positive for PVP virus in lung samples, and 5.3% (2/38) (P3 and P9) tested positive for CVP-2 in foetal spleen samples. This is the first stud...

In Peru there is clinical evidence of the Influenza A virus (VIA) and the presence of antibodies against the VIA in pigs, but there are no official reports of frequency in pig farms in the country. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of antibodies against VIA in technical farms in Lima, Ica and Arequipa with a history of respiratory problems. Blood samples were obtained from eight age groups of pigs during 2020-2021. Antibodies against VIA were detected using a blocking ELISA test (IDEXX, USA). A total of 283 serum samples from Lima, 287 from Ica and 288 from Arequipa were processed. The overall frequency of antibodies against VIA was 24.9% (95% CI 22.0 – 27.8); while in Lima, Ica and Arequipa it was 33.2% (95% CI 27.8 - 39.0), 19.5% (95% CI 15.1 - 24.6) and 22.2% (95% CI 17.6 - 27.5), respectively. The logistic regression analysis showed that in the Lima region, the ag...
