Peatlands provide several ecosystem products and services, highlighting their capacity to mitigate climate change through carbon storage. In this sense, this study focused on evaluating the physical characteristics and carbon content in peat soils from the communities of Nuevo Saposoa and Patria Nueva located on the Ucayali River. We evaluated (i) the depth of peat, as well as the horizontal and vertical distribution of (ii) pH, (iii) the degree of decomposition, (iv) the apparent density, (v) the proportion of organic matter and carbon and (vi) the carbon stored (stock) in peat. The depth of peat in the study area varied between 19 and 210 cm. Saposoa swamp (AS) had the greatest depth with 132.1 ± 21.8 cm.
