Leprosy is a transmissible disease that still can be found in Peru, specifically in some areas within the Peruvian Amazon jungle. Many times, the terminology used to describe relevant aspects of this disease is wrong, and some terms have been widely used since the middle ages. In this opinion article we will deal with three aspects in which both healthcare professionals and lay people continue using wrong terms and concepts.

Within our sense for living, we have a clear obligation to pay tribute and to continue the pathway set by those who have been the real leaders of Peruvian medicine. Consequently, this is a tribute to Dr. Julian Arce-Ramirez, a very famous and wellrespected Peruvian physician, a distinguished citizen, and a loyal supporter of every noble cause.

El presente año de 2003 se conmemoran varios aconrencimientos y entre ellos tres importantes que nos conciernen tanto para la enseñanza médica como para la Salud Pública; 1) la inauguración del nuevo local de la Facultad de Medicina de San Fernando; 2) la creación de la Dirección General del Salubriedad; y 3) el ingreso de la Peste en el Perú.

The aunthors have studied the epidemiology of Bartonellosis (Carrión's disease) in Ancash, Perú. The Work strated in Casma and was carried out until hullanca across Huaraz covering a total distance of 395 Kms. During this traveling survery we observe the topography of the country, house resources and the characteristics of the human population of the region. Phelebotomus peruensis was found in two places. We did not find Phlebotomus verrucarum. Tha analisis of the medical statistics of the hospitals of Huaraz, since 1958 until 1972, show that bartonellosis still is an endemic disease in the province of Ancash with tendency to declinate and predominance of the cutaneous type (Verruga peruana) of the disease.
