Alberto Magno fue un religioso católico ávido por entender la naturaleza de todas las cosas. Fue autor de diversas obras filosóficas y teológicas, pero tambiénde tratados sobre minerales, biología, física e incluso de alquimia. Vivió en la Europa del siglo XIII y ya entonces defendía los principios del método científico.

Once again the students of the Peruvian delegation selected by the Peruvian Chemistry Olympiad (OPQ) achieved very good results in the international competitions of 2014: the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Vietnam and the Iberoamerican Chemistry Olympiad (OIAQ) in Uruguay.

Chitin is an abundant biopolymer that can be found in shells of crustaceans, insects and in squid and pota pen. Deacetylation of chitin produces chitosan, a more versatile polysaccharide due to its solubility and increased chemical reactivity. Chitosan is used in medicine, pharmaceutics, cosmetics, water treatment, agriculture and food industry.

El aprendizaje de la Química es difícil, pues requiere que el estudiante sea capaz de relacionar el mundo macroscópico que percibe con un mundo submicroscópico basado en átomos y moléculas que no puede percibir, y debe, además, poder aprender un sistema de símbolos necesarios para su representación. Sin embargo, a pesar de esta dificultad, es importante enseñar Química a no especialistas como un conocimiento que le permita enterarse del desarrollo tecnológico y científico que afecta diariamente nuestras vidas. La tarea del docente es adaptar el conocimiento científico para que el estudiante pueda conectarlo con sus conocimientos previos y así lograr un aprendizaje significativo. Es importante, además, transmitir el carácter evolutivo de la Química mostrando los retos que se deben enfrentar.

Quinine, present in the bark of the cinchona tree, native to the South American Andes, is one of the natural medicines that has saved more lives in the history of humanity. Its economic importance, as a treatment for malaria, generated a search for its synthetic route. This promoted the development of organic synthesis and marked the beginning of industrial organic chemistry. Quinine, a compound so connected not only with the history of Peru but also with that of organic synthesis, was highlighted in the XXII Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad-2017.
