Neural tube defects are the second most frequent cause of congenital malformation during prenatal development. They constitute 10% of them. The origin is usually multifactorial, and it results in an incomplete or defective closure of the anterior or posterior neuropore, causing different levels of defects in the central nervous system. Despite all the research done, our knowledge of genetics in this topic is very limited so we don’t know how many genes can confer risk of anomaly in the development of the neural tube. Diagnosis is mainly based on the ultrasound study of the central nervous system generally during the second trimester. La infección por citomegalovirus (CMV) es muy frecuente a nivel mundial y las mujeres están constantemente expuestas al contagio durante el embarazo, con el consecuente riesgo de transmisión vertical. La infección materna suele ser asintomática y solo se sospecha la infección fetal ante el hallazgo de anormalidades fetales en el estudio ecográfico. Al nacer, solo 10 a 15% de los recién nacidos presentan síntomas, siendo las alteraciones auditivas y el desarrollo neurológico los más frecuentemente comprometidos. A día de hoy solo disponemos de medidas higiénico-sanitarias para la prevención de la infección durante la gestación, a la espera de resultados en el desarrollo de una nueva vacuna contra el CMV y de estudios multicéntricos controlados que avalen el uso o no de antivirales e inmunoglobulinas en gestantes infectadas por CMV.
