A group of Chinese scientists have found a new gene in gram negative bacteria, the MCR-1. This gene has given pathogenic bacteria resistance to colistin, which is the antibacterial that medical doctors use as last line of defense against multi-drug resistant infections. Superbacteria with MCR-1 will be potentially epidemic, and diseases that were believed to be controlled such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and urinary tract infections could be lethal again.

El fenómeno de la salinización del suelo afecta el adecuado crecimiento de las plantas y es una de las principales causas de degradación del suelo (FAO, 2007). Se estima que 397 millones de hectáreas de cultivos en el mundo (3,1 %) presentaron un exceso de sales en el año 2005 (Setia et al., 2013). Se observa este impacto principalmente en zonas con climas áridos y semi-áridos debido a: mayor evaporación de agua, aumento del nivel freático, agua de riego salinizada y malas prácticas agrícolas, como el uso excesivo de fertilizantes y quema del cultivo residual (Alva et al., 1976). Los suelos agrícolas son el recurso más escaso del país. Los cultivos de San Pedro de Lloc se ubican en la costa norte peruana y son una importante fuente de la producción nacional de arroz, azúcar, maíz, etc. (Quispe, 2009; Vinelli, 2012).
