The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of Saccharomyses cerevisiae supplementation on digestive health and zootechnical parameters in postlarvae of red tilapia Oreochromis sp in the reversion phase, in a culture system with low water turnover, in San Jerónimo (Antioquia, Colombia). The trial was carried out for four weeks. Nine fiberglass channels (three repetitions) were used for a Control group (T1) and two probiotic treatments (T2: 16 g/kg feed = 16%) and (T3: 31 g/kg feed = 31%). The physicochemical characteristics of the water were analysed and zootechnical data were taken from the post-larva. Intestinal health was evaluated by histopathology. The results indicated that the physicochemical parameters of the water were similar between treatments and were within the acceptable range for the hybrid (average oxygen 9.1±0.4 mg/l, temperature 27.6±0.1 °C, constant p...

Parasites are one of the biggest problems affecting fish health, Trichodina sp being the most common in the early life stages of the red tilapia Oreochromis sp. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of pharmacological and homeopathic substances in the control of Trichodina sp in red tilapia larvae at the Centro Experimental Piscícola (Antioquia, Colombia). In total, 300 red tilapia larvae in the reversion phase (80 observations/larva) were used and distributed in 15 aquariums, each with an effective volume of 63 L. At 0 and 48 hours, two homeopathic substances were applied (garlic [Allium sativum] and ginger [Zingiber officinale], 5 mg/L each) and two pharmacological substances (metronidazole and albendazole, 10 mg/L each) and a control group. The larvae were sedated and the number of Trichodina sp was counted at 0, 48 and 72 h using an optical microscope (4X objectiv...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Insulin-Transferrin-Selenium (ITS) supplementation in embryo culture on the blastocyst rate and embryo quality. The bovine zygotes obtained by in vitro maturation (MIV) and fertilization (IVF) were transferred to Evolve medium in 4 groups (T1: Without ITS supplement; T2: ITS the first 48 h of culture (CIV1): T3: ITS after day 2 of culture (CIV2), T4: ITS during all culture time (CIV1 + CIV2). All procedures were performed at 38.5 °C, 5% CO2 and 90% relative humidity. The cleavage and blastocyst rates were determined at 48 h and day 8 of culture. The total cell number and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the expanded blastocysts were determined by staining the nucleus with Hoechst and the oxidation of the fluorescent probe dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA). The T4 cultured embryos presented the highest ra...
