The press images awarded as “photo of the year” by World Press Photo in the period between 2000 and 2011 represent international conflicts and disasters where the main characters are mostly women and children, plenty of drama and pathos. Las formas actuales de interacción y mediación social a través de internet llevan a reconsiderar los conceptos de comunicación y de diversidad cultural. El paso de la diversidad cultural a la diversidad intercultural considera el desarrollo mediático como oportunidad para transformar las prácticas comunicativas. Los escenarios y los soportes del universo digital son útiles para repensar el periodismo desde conceptos como la representación de los diferentes, las nuevas temáticas, la posibilidad de dar voz a los sin voz, de desarrollar reportajes en profundidad –gracias a la multimedialidad o la hipertextualidad– y de desplegar estrategias de  participación a partir de las modalidades del periodismo ciudadano, humanitario, de servicio, social e intercultural.

Este estudio propone una evaluación de la calidad periodística utilizando indicadores interculturales y códigos deontológicos. Para ello se observa la cobertura televisiva internacional, ofrecida por las televisiones públicas europeas BBC, TF 2 France, RAI 1 y TVE 1 en el período del 19 al 22 de octubre de 2013, de la historia conocida mediáticamente como “el ángel rubio”: la aparición de una niña en un campamento gitano en Grecia, en un presunto caso de tráfico de menores o de un secuestro. Se constata que la información se aleja de los estándares de calidad y contribuye a la estigmatización de los gitanos y a la etnificación del delito.
