This report presents a geotechnical analysis of the soils in the area of the Machu Picchu Peruvian scientific base, located at Punta Crepin, on the Antarctic peninsula. The work carried out is part of the soil studies necessary to define the foundation conditions for the future expansion and installation of new research modules at the base. During the ANTAR XXVI expedition in 2019, the final geotechnical campaign was carried out to carry out a detailed reconnaissance of the soils that will serve as support for the foundations to be defined at the Peruvian base. This campaign included field work, carrying out 12 pits, 24 density tests and obtaining samples from the strata. These normal and special field and laboratory tests, in representative samples, will allow characterizing the soils under study. The results obtained reveal that in Punta Crepin there is a superficial layer compos...

This article addresses in detail the geotechnical characterization of fine soils in the city of Pucallpa, in the Amazon region of Peru. With the main objective of describing the mechanical behavior and the very particular physical characteristics of these fine clay-type soils in the areas of Yarinacocha, Manantay and Callería, for this purpose, a geotechnical campaign was carried out that consisted of the execution of 40 manual excavations of the open-air pit type with depths of up to 1.50 meters, with the purpose of recovering unaltered samples in the form of cubes of 0.40 m on each side, for subsequent transfer to the soil mechanics laboratory of the Ricardo Palma University, where they were They carried out normal and special tests to obtain their physical and mechanical characteristics. The samples are characterized by the predominance of fine clay-type particles of high and low pla...

Currently, the preconsolidation effort is generally determined from the one-dimensional consolidation test in the laboratory, whose procedure is too long and requires a lot of execution time, where one must wait between 10 to 15 days to obtain the results. However, the United States Department of the Navy has alternative theories and formulas to determine this parameter in a more practical way and in less time, based on the determination of the liquidity index and the sensitivity of the soil. Therefore, this research work will calculate the pre-consolidation effort based on the aforementioned methodology of fine soils (clay), a determining geotechnical parameter to calculate settlements due to consolidation when applying a load to a structure to be built. In this way, unaltered samples of clay soils well distributed in the city of Pucallpa have been tested, carrying out laboratory tests ...

In this research, we seek to experimentally determine the undrained shear strength (Su) of a soft clay soil by unconventional methods in the practice of Peruvian Engineering. The fall-cone test was used, which is a laboratory equipment commonly used to obtain the liquid limit of soils. To calibrate the results, laboratory miniature vane test equipment was used, which provides direct measurement of Su. The study was conducted with thirteen undisturbed samples extracted from the localities of Rioja and Moyobamba in the San Martín region, Peru. As a result, an empirical correlation was obtained that allows the undrained shear strength of these soils to be determines from the fall-cone test. The research concludes that, with adequate calibration, the fall-cone is a reliable tool for determining the undrained shear strength of soft soils. Furthermore, its simple and low-cost execution makes ...

The behavior of soft fine-grained soils is considered one of the most complex and problematic, from a geotechnical point of view. For this reason, knowledge of its strength and deformability parameters is important and fundamental. In this paper, a review of the available literature is carried out about the use of fall-cone test in determining the undrained shear strength of these soils, the necessary calibrations and the main advances in the determination of the cone factor K. Fall-Cone este is widely used to obtain the liquid limit of soils, and due to the ease of use it becomes a quick and economical alternative to obtain the undrained shear strength of soft clay soils.
