This text seeks to open up some issues that will allow accounting for the deep changes that are taking place in the Peruvian university that is going through a structural crisis. When I refer to the crisis of the university, I do not mention the difficulties that are within the university system, which are many. These are shallow crises and can be resolved through some reforms. The real crisis is caused by problems that cannot be solved within the framework of the existing system, but requires another system to solve them. Higher education in Peru is in this situation. The pervasive university model in much of the twentieth century has reached a point of bifurcation. That model has eroded and we are in a chaotic period of transit towards another form of institutional organization of the production and transmission of highly qualified knowledge. The crisis of the modern / colonial univers...

Of the various issues raised by reading the book, two that are considered fundamental are examined: first, the problem of exposition, that is, the way in which Quijano presents the examination of complex problems; secondly, the exploration of the treatment of the problem of the decoloniality of power. The comment is concluded by pointing out Quijano’s interest in “the reconstitution of a Latin American problems”.

The world where we live is following a process of deep mutations that form a new social order. Therefore, latin american sociology needs to construct a new image of the society, because the one that it had is now obsolete in substantial aspects. For that reason it needs to reorganize its theories, concepts and analysis methods. As A. Touraine points out, «the analysis of a new society supposes a renovation of the same analysis». This it is the fundamental challenge for our discipline. In the present text I look at some aspects that can contribute to the accomplishment of this task, especially from the analysis of the José Carlos Mariátegui perspective, the Immanuel Wallerstein modern system-world theory and the Aníbal Quijano coloniality of power concept.

This article argues on the reflections of Anibal Quijano, which have been focused on conceiving a new approach to understand the problems of Latin America. Among the different subjects to be explored within his vast theoretical production, we will examine three core ideas that remain central to his concerns and that are fundamental to explain the forms of organization and the possibilities of transformation of the current social order. First, the notion of pattern of power; secondly, the nature of the crisis of the colonial/modern pattern of power; and third, the tendencies towards decoloniality of power and the future historical options.

The intellectual and political project of the Amauta magazine question the Eurocentric perspective of knowledge in the sciences and the humanities during the 1920s due to the hegemony of thought of the “generation of the twentieth century”. Amauta sought to express the new spirit that arose in the “new generation” of intellectuals and artists who had a common task: “their willingness to create a new Peru in the new world”. This aim involved a new way of posing problems and to understand the peruvian issues whose central axis was an analytical perspective which has been dividing the logos and the myth, the eurocentrism. In this paper explores some of the epistemological orientations that point out Amauta, still in an embryonic way, but significantly and consistently toward the perspective of the coloniality of knowledge.
