In the Neotropical Region, the only species of Cylicospirura reported so far in felines is Cylicospirura (Cylicospirura) subaequalis in Paraguay and Brazil. Between 2007 and 2009, roadkilled specimens of Leopardus geoffroyi (n = 6) were donated for necropsy. Nematodes found in the stomach of one individual were identified as Cylicospirura (Cylicospirura) felineus by the presence of six large tricuspid teeth, a vulva anterior to the junction of the esophagus and intestine, and the size of the spicules. The prevalence of C. (C.) felineus in L. geoffroyi was 16.7%. No lesions caused by the nematodes were found in the infected feline, as reported in other studies. This is the first report of C. (C.) felineus in the Neotropical Region (State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) and L. geoffroyi represents a new host.

Genarchella parva Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928 has been reported mainly in Characidae hosts. The morphology of this species has been known based on specimens collected mainly by Travassos and researchers (20s and 60s decades) and also from specimens in Argentina. The goal of this study was to describe the morphology of G. parva, provide the parameters of the infections from different fish species and discuss the host’s checklist from Brazil. Specimens of G. parva were collected from species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 and Psalidodon Eigenmann, 1911 in Jacuí Delta (north of the Lake Guaíba, in the municipality of Porto Alegre) and Lagoon Itapeva (municipality of Terra de Areia), extreme south of Brazil. The localization of the genital pore of G. parva and Genarchella fragilis Lunaschi, 1990 was compared and discussed. The prevalence of G. parva was higher in Psalido...

Monogeneans encompass a group of parasites whose identification requires the visualization of both internal and external morphology. In most cases, the techniques involve many steps and the use of restricted substances, in addition to the necessity of protective equipment. Faure’s mounting medium, an aqueous medium similar to Hoyer’s mounting medium, has already been used for the preparation of the group. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Faure’s medium for the mounting of stained specimens. For this purpose, specimens of Microcotyle pomatomi Goto, 1900 and Gotocotyla acanthura (Parona & Perugia, 1896) Meserve, 1938, collected from Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1766) in the southernmost part of Brazil were used. The monogeneans were stained with five different dyes and mounted between a slide and coverslip using Faure’s mounting medium. The specimens...

The coypu (Myocastor coypus Molina, 1782) has been reported as the definitive host of Hippocrepis fuelleborni in Argentina and Uruguay; and Hippocrepis myocastoris Babero, Cabello & Kinoed, 1979 in Chile. Specimens of M. coypus (n = 4) from the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, were received from donations and necropsied in the laboratory. Digeneans were identified as H. fuelleborni due to the presence of ventral papillae, oblique testes and eggs with no polar filaments. The prevalence of H. fuelleborni was 25%, with a mean intensity of infection of 12 helminths/ host. The infection of M. coypus by H. fuelleborni probably occurred as a result of the ingestion of aquatic plants with metacercariae. This is the first report of H. fuelleborni parasitizing M. coypus in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
