La enfermedad de Chagas o Tripanosomiasis americana es una antropozoonosis resultado de la infección con el Tripanosoma cruzi, trasmitido principalmente por contaminación con heces infectadas de insectos hematófagos de la familia Reduviidae, sub-familia Triatominae. El concepto de enfermedad no debe ser confundido con el de infección, pués la mayoría de individuos permanecen infectados toda su vida sin manifestaciones clínicas. La enfermedad puede ser aguda o crónica, afectando el corazón (miocardiopatía progresiva), esófago, intestino grueso y raramente otras vísceras huecas (síndromes-mega).

A possible association between intestinal parasite infection in immunocompromised patients with and the contamination their domiciliary environment may exist.
