The purpose of this work is to review the current medical and scientific bibliographic evidence available, regarding adequate energy and protein caloric nutrition in patients with Chronic Renal Insufficiency and emphasizing the deleterious effects of the intake of proteins of animal origin, both in kidney function and with special emphasis on kidney disease. The review considers both historical and recent research on the role of adequate protein and caloric nutrition in the diet both in chronic kidney disease and in the prevention and protection of normal kidney function.
