El presente artículo pretende realizar una aproximación al mundo de los artesanos limeños a través de las cofradías de oficio. El marcado corporativismo de la sociedad del Antiguo Régimen fue un rasgo especialmente significativo en el ámbito artesanal, ya que en él confluyeron dos corporaciones: el gremio y la cofradía. En este sentido, el objetivo concreto del trabajo es dar un primer paso para averiguar cuál fue el papel que desempeñaron las cofradías de artesanos, más allá de su dimensión religiosa, dentro del mundo de los oficios. Mediante el análisis de las ordenanzas de las cofradías de zapateros y sastres, el autor nos muestra cómo las corporaciones religiosas fueron utilizadas por los artesanos para obtener el control del gremio o para legislar cuestiones laborales, valiéndose de la mayor autoridad moral de la cofradía.

The general objective of this work is to approach the world of the artisans of Lima through the study of its brotherhoods. The corporatism of the Ancient Regime was a feature especially significant at the artisanal level, with the convergence of the two corporations: the brotherhood and the guild. The objective of this paper is to analyze the role played by the brotherhoods of craftsmen beyond their religious dimensions. Through the study of the ordinances of the brotherhoods of shoemakers and tailors the author shows how religious corporations were used by artisans to gain control of the guild or to legislate labor matters. This was achieved by the brotherhood with their higher moral authority in comparison to the guild.
