Desde que en 1848 se publicó por entregas la primera novela indigenista del Perú, El Padre Horán de Narciso Aréstegui, hasta 1933, en que la Asociación Sindical Universitaria editó la revista Hanan, varias generaciones de indigenistas cusqueños se habían preocupado por entender y resolver el problema del indio. Esta actitud no sólo nos refiere al hecho de existir una narrativa indigenista —o ensayistas, como los ha llamado Luis Enrique Tord— sino a los nexos y contactos que se establecieron entre intelectuales y campesinos cusqueños, tanto por la vía del conocimiento como por la labor práctica.

A book is above all an open door to a new world of knowledge without borders. Reviewing it implies discussing it to, in some way, make that world more accessible and delimit its borders. The recent publication of the collective book by Degregori, Valderrama, Alfageme and Francke; INDIGENISMO, SOCIAL CLASSES AND NATIONAL PROBLEM, therefore, supposes starting this process of critical reading that every good book creates within the reading public.
