Don Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala, whose mother tongue was Quechua, writes in Spanish between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. His work, the New Chronicle and Good Government, is thus situated at the beginning of contact between the Andean peoples and the West, often showing a marked duality at all levels; It is this dual aspect that I wish to comment on in order to determine the forms it takes, the character of acculturation, its diversity and its consequences.

The work that we propose here has been carried out taking as an object of analysis a set of stories present in the "Nueva Crónica y Buen Gobierno" by Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala (Guamán poma, 1980). As its name indicates, it is a chronicle that was written in Peru between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. The last wording is presumed for around 1610-1615 (Adorno, 1980), that is, before a century had passed since the Spanish conquest. Very little is known about the author, Guamán Poma, apart from what he presents about himself, his family and his environment in the chronicle itself. Siguán and Mackey, classics of the literature on bilingualism, have just published this useful overview of studies on education and bilingualism, one of the few global views on the subject. The book is published with the support of the International Office of Education in Geneva and is of considerable value insofar as accounting for a bibliography as extensive as that of bilingualism is already a feat in itself.
