The aim of this work was to propose a latent equation model that structures the relationship between academic engagement, schadenfreude and prosocial behavior on the school climate. We used a cross-sectional design and 437 secondary students from Chile were recruited. School Climate Scale, Engagement UWES-S 9, School Prosocial Behavior Inventory and Schadenfreude scale were administered. Factor analysis, reliability test, correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were performed to analysis data. After fitting two models for our data and contrasting them with theoretical literature, we found that school climate was affected directly by school engagement and prosocial behavior. Academic engagement positive affects, direct and indirectly, the school climate. An increase in academic engagement also lowers the levels of schadenfreude and causes an increase in the levels of pr...

The aim of this paper is to analyze and systematize subjective change in education based on a review of the main contributions derived from national and international studies on subjective theories (ST) conducted to date in the field of education. An overview of the research on ST in education is presented. Findings are then analyzed and systematized in a model of ST change in educational contexts that considers: (a) a paradigmatic framework, (b) a change process, (c) change factors, and (e) change indicators. In the conclusion section, a summary of the process of ST change in educational contexts is proposed, based on empiric studies reviewed and testable in future research, and the limitations that must be overcome in order to make strides in the construction of a theory of ST change in education are discussed.

Background: we are facing a global crisis that threatens the subsistence of the planet. Although during the last decades a set of measures have been proposed to face this global crisis, the results have not been auspicious. State of the art: given the important role of professionals in society, in this work it is argued that a systematic development of professional identity in initial training is key to sustainable development. It is proposed that this professional identity could be built based on the dimensions (a) integration of subjective, professional and scientific knowledge, (b) creativity to address current and future problems, (c) prosocial and (d) ecological. The objective of this work is to support the urgency of this to respond to the global crisis and provide suggestions that guide the systematic development of professional identity during initial training, based on these dim...

Objective: the present work aims to learn about the subjective theories of the prosocial behavior of young volunteers during the response and recovery stages of a socionatural disaster. Method: a qualitative case design was used by selecting, through intentional sampling, 11 university students who volunteered in the face of the hydrometeorological disaster occurred in Atacama, Chile. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and a discussion group, using the coding process in grounded theory as an analysis strategy. Results: we found that (i) volunteers understand prosocial behavior as a process of limited-temporality humanitarian aid which depends on empathy towards those affected; the perception of institutional (in)capacity; a subjective risk assessment; self-perceived abilities; and a sense of social responsibility in the face of a disaster; (ii) its development is linke...

Background: Intimate partner violence is a coercive and/ or controlling behavior on the romantic partner, which includes different types of damage and represents one of the main causes of death for women worldwide. Objective: To describe and interpret the subjective theories about intimate partner violence, of a group of women from a public university in northern Chile, who have been victims of this type of violence in their lives. Method: qualitative methodology, a case study design, and a theoretical sampling of 15 women victims of intimate partner violence, from a university in northern Chile, are used. Fifteen semistructured interviews were applied, which were analyzed based on thematic coding, grounded theory and specific analysis of subjective theories. Results: subjective theories were found that are characterized by promoting the choice of violent partners, keeping women in this ...

Background: Achieving high quality teacher training requires teachers to have the opportunity to develop not only professional skills but also, fundamentally, their professional identity. Objective: To describe and interpret the subjective theories of Basic General Education Pedagogy students from a public university in northern Chile regarding the construction of professional identity in early practices. Method: A qualitative case study methodology was used with a theoretical sample of nine Basic General Education Pedagogy students from a public university in northern Chile. The data, obtained from episodic interviews and a group interview, was analyzed based on the grounded theory. Results: The following was found: (a) different meanings about early practice and an evaluation that includes positive and negative aspects of the process, (b) an association between the development of profe...
