Levels of music performance anxiety (MPA) were compared in a sample of 455 Peruvian music students according to gender (males=337; females=113; missing=5), musical institution (two private and one state) and musical genre. Only gender showed an effect on MPA scores, picturing higher scores for the female group, although cultural variables could account for this difference. There were no effects of educational institution or musical genre as determined on MPA scores.

La ansiedad ante el desempeño musical (ADM) es un fenómeno complejo y con consecuencias potencialmente serias para los músicos que la experimentan. En este artículo, resumo la literatura más reciente de este dinámico campo de estudios. Específicamente, presentaré los siguientes puntos: definición, consecuencias, prevalencia y ratamientos, y limitaciones. Habiendo desarrollado estas secciones, dedico la última al estudio de la ADM en el Perú. Este artículo busca fomentar una discusión abierta y científica sobre la ADM, que informe acerca de prácticas pedagógicas y profesionales para procurar el bienestar de los músicos. Asimismo, el artículo contribuye con la literatura disponible en español, puesto que la mayoría de estudios sobre la ADM se encuentra solo en foros de la lengua inglesa.

Music performance anxiety is a condition that affects instrumentalist musicians independently of gender, years of training, music style, etc.; and can deteriorate their professional development. Nevertheless, there are no specific tests for Peruvian music students. The aim of this research was to adapt and estimate the psychometric properties of the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI) on a sample of 455 professional music students from three professional music institutions. After back translating the test, the author of the English test recognized it as the official Spanish version. Appropriate validity evidence based on test content was estimated by eight subject matter experts.
